The Victorian Coastal Council is appointed under the Coastal Management Act 1995 as the peak body for the strategic planning and management of the Victorian coast, and to provide advice to the Minister for Environment and Climate Change.

In Victoria 96% of the coast is in public ownership, making it largely accessible and providing for a wide range of experiences from the bustling city beaches to smaller seaside settlements and the remote, untouched wilderness areas. The coast is undoubtedly one of Victoria's most valuable and cherished destinations, providing significant environmental, economic, social and cultural values for Victorians.
