The Bracks Government is committed to establishing a system of
marine national parks and marine sanctuaries to protect
representative examples of Victoria's marine environment. The system will cover

Great
Ocean Road Region Strategy
The Department of Infrastructure is developing the Great Ocean Road
Region Strategy in partnership with local government, Department of
Natural Resources and Environment, Department of State and Regional
Development, Tourism Victoria, VicRoads and the Victorian Coastal Council.
The Strategy aims
to improve management of the region and encourage change, which will
optimise the environmental, social and outcomes for the Great Ocean
Road Region. Recommendations for action, how these will be achieved
and who will be responsible for them will be included in the final Strategy.
It will also provide a framework and process for implementing, monitoring
and reporting to the community and government on how well the outcomes
of the Strategy are being achieved.
Water Safety Signage
The Minister for Police and Emergency Services, the Hon. Andre Haeymeyer,
launched the new Aquatic and Recreation Signage Style Guide in March
2004. The Guide was developed by Life Saving Victoria in conjunction
with the Aquatic Signage Steering Committee.
The signage features
a combination of existing and newly designed elements, all of which
meet Australian standards. The Guide is picture based and uses international
symbols wherever possible, ensuring that signs can be easily understood
by overseas visitors. The manual also contains information on specific
structure and installation requirements and the prioritisation of sign-based
messages.
Metropolitan Strategy
The Metropolitan Strategy is a key Department of Infrastructure (DOI)
project, which aims to create a bold vision for retaining and enhancing
Melbourne's livability over the next 20 years. DOI is working with the
community, local government, business and industry to develop a strategy
which will outline how our city can be shaped to better meet the needs
of all people who live, work, visit and use services in Melbourne and
the surrounding region.
Gippsland Lakes Environmental Study
The Gippsland Coastal Board commissioned the CSIRO to undertake the
Gippsland Lakes Environmental Study. The study, released on 28 November
2001, aims to improve the understanding of how the Gippsland Lakes work,
the interactions with catchments and what is needed to reduce the frequency
and severity of algal blooms.
The Study was a
highly successful collaborative work between the CSIRO, State Government
agencies, statutory authorities, private industries as well as significant
contributions from various academic institutions, independent scientific
experts and on-ground practitioners.
The Study will
be used by the Gippsland Lakes Taskforce to begin to develop an overarching
plan for the Lakes and surrounding catchments.
